Frequently asked questions

Is there a prescribed curriculum the MSS is designed for ?
The My sCool Server was designed after careful research of pedagogical tools widely adopted and recommended by educationists across the globe. However, coincidentally it also adheres to the key principles, recommendations and the approach proposed in the Model Computer Science Curriculum for K-12 schools (CMC). The proposed model curriculum explains how it helps establish the foundation and prepares the students for the recommended curriculum of the various central and regional boards as they progress through grades 9 to 12. In the absence of an objective, detailed and outcomes oriented curriculum, the CMC serves as a guiding light.
Likewise there is another more recent and comprehensive curriculum from CSpathshala which focuses on computational thinking. It is accompanied with pedagogical content in multiple languages and may be adopted. The My sCool Server has everything needed to accompany this curriculum and has the multi-lingual curriculum pre-loaded as well.
Do note that the prime aim of the My sCool Server is to simplify and solve the challenges related to deployment and maintenance of stable and reliable IT infrastructure in the educational context.
Are there any recommended publishers or books ?
The My sCool Server has a very generic design with respect to the software tools packaged into it. We have found it to be well equipped and supportive of the instructions given in computer subject books prescribed by various state boards such as that of Gujarat and Kerala.
The MSS comes preloaded, with world acclaimed second edition of the Computer Masti series released under Creative Commons which also contain excellent teacher guidance material. The MSS is also equipped with self-paced training material from Spoken Tutorial made available offline. Another excellent source of curriculum and pedagogical content related to Computational Thinking, available via CSpathshala, is also preloaded. All this and more, completely free-of-cost. Hence the MSS is a self sufficient solution to get rolling to impart high quality “computer fluency“.
However, those looking to purchase quality instructional material in-line with the CMC: A Model Computer Science Curriculum for K-12 Schools from some leading publishers may opt for the Computer Masti series from Next Education or the Linux based Cloud series from KIPS or the Go With Linux series from Macmillan. Likewise there may be other publishers who cater to the need of quality instructional medium for computer literacy.
Disclaimer: Recherche is not affiliated to any of the publishers or content providers mentioned above and it must not be mistaken for an endorsement. Do kindly exercise your discretion.
Do the teachers need any special training to start using the server ?

No, once the server is connected to the network and all systems have been booted over the network, the experience of the desktop environment is almost the same as that detailed in most of the textbooks. Hence to get up and running, the accompanying Getting Started Guide is enough.

Our dealer partner’s pre-sales team would have already familiarized you with the pedagogical content and the lesson planning process that you need to follow and shall ensure that you are completely comfortable with the same prior to concluding the sale.

For those who opt for the default installation, the teacher logins are also pre-configured, details of which are herein. Hence, all you need to do is login using the default credentials and get going with imparting the lessons.

However, overtime it is highly recommended that a teacher, coach or the IT in-charge should master all the simple concepts detailed in the user manual as well as illustrated in careful detail in the how-to videos.

Are there any discounts available for non-profits, govt. school projects?

Yes. Special pricing and packages are available for not-for-profit educational institutes, NGOs and social groups deploying at schools serving the children of the lower income group or the under-served sections of our society.

For details of how we work in this area visit our Social Impact section.

Is the MSS available with alternative hardware configurations?

Our base version i.e. MSS2C410 is designed for 70 simultaneous users in a computer lab. However, the My sCool Server’s multiple avataars have encouraged users to use it in innovative ways for smart classrooms and tablet based learning models. Thus we have variants to cater to the varying scale and adaptations of digital learning.

MSS2C810 – Intel Celeron, 8 GB DDR3, 1 TB SATA

MSS2P410 – Intel Pentium, 4 GB DDR3, 1 TB SATA

MSS23810 – Intel i3, 8 GB DDR4, 1 TB SATA

For complete details of variants, refer the product specification sheet. These being our non-standard offerings, one may get in touch with us for a custom quote.

What is the minimum hardware specification of the user computers ?

Chances are that the hardware which you already have is more than sufficient to serve as client / user terminals. One of the great advantages of the My sCool Server is that you can set up a high quality lab of terminals for your students by leveraging the machines you may already have.

The recommended minimum configuration of the client terminals being –  2 GB RAM, Dual core / current generation Celeron CPU, PXE boot capable LAN port.

See this for further detail.

Do I need a LAN (Local Area Network) to use the MSS ?

Yes, a minimum Gigabit LAN (Cat 5e) is required that connects all the client computers to the MSS appliance via a switch (preferably Gigabit). It is only thereafter that one can boot the client computers using the My sCool Server. Hence, a reliable and high quality local area network is crucial for the proper functioning of a MSS based infrastructure and for experiencing its full benefits.

We also strongly investing in structured networking as compared to unstructured networking. Structured networking is a one time investment which guarantees life-long trouble free functioning. Herein are a few images that will help explain the visible difference between structured and unstructured networking.

See this for more details.

Can NComputing / thin-client devices be used as clients for the MSS ?

No. NComputing devices follow a proprietary protocol to work and they do not match with our minimum specification requirements of 2 GB RAM, dual core / current generation Celeron CPU, PXE boot capable LAN port.

Similarly, most thin-client based infrastructure solutions either adhere to proprietary protocols or do not meet the minimum client computer specifications. Hence they cannot be reused in the context of a MSS based infrastructure.

How does the MSS facilitate interactive smart classes?
With our latest innovation on the MSS, a white-wall and a projector is all that is needed to simulate an interactive smart board that can be navigated and controlled from an Android phone or any handheld device. If there is a need of more precise control for writing and hand-writing recognition then one may opt for inexpensive graphics tablets from Wacom or XP-Pen. To know more, visit our helpdesk or get in touch with us.
Does the MSS facilitate self-paced and blended learning models?
Yes, the My sCool Server supports self-paced and blended learning when each student is equipped with a computing device such as a tablet or a computer. The MSS is equipped with whiteboard software and learning management systems through which teachers can do their lesson planning and conduct assessments. To know more, visit our helpdesk or get in touch with us.
